Requirements to export from Spain

The requirements to export from Spain vary depending on the country of destination, the type of product or service being exported, and the value of the shipment. In some cases, an export license may be required.

The first step is to determine whether your product or service can be exported. This includes understanding any export restrictions that may be in place.

Next, you need to choose a method of shipping your product or service. This will depend on the type of product or service, the value of the shipment, and the country of destination.

Once you have chosen a shipping method, you need to obtain the necessary export documentation. This includes a commercial invoice, packing list, and bill of lading. You may also need an export license, depending on the product or service being exported and the destination country.

Finally, you need to arrange for payment. This can be done through a letter of credit, cash in advance, or another method of payment agreed upon by the buyer and seller.

Customs and tax formalities

  • Census declaration: used to notify the Tax Authorities of the start of the business activity. You can complete the procedure online by filling in form 036.
  • Register of Intra-Community Operators:  Given that intra-Community deliveries of goods are exempt from VAT, when you register in this register you are exempt from this tax, as long as it is taxed in the country of destination. Therefore, both the exporter and the importer must have an Intra-Community Operator number and be registered in the VIES census.
  • Intrastat: a system for compiling data on goods traffic within the European Union. In Spain, it is compulsory to file the Intrastat declaration for intra-Community operations whose value reaches the exemption threshold (400,000 euros).
  • Single Customs Document (SAD): it is an export declaration to the customs authorities, made up of 8 copies that vary according to the destination of the goods.
